Overview

Riverside Healthcare is seeking a dedicated and skilled Acute Hospital OB Scrub Tech to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring the smooth operation of our obstetric surgeries by providing expert assistance in the operating room. You will work closely with surgeons, nurses, and other medical staff to support high-quality patient care during deliveries and related procedures. Your meticulous attention to detail and proficiency in sterile techniques will contribute to the safe and efficient delivery of care in our busy obstetrics department.

Essential Duties

  • Surgical Assistance: Prepare and maintain the sterile field, ensuring all necessary surgical instruments and supplies are readily available for obstetric procedures.
  • Instrument Handling: Scrub, gown, and glove appropriately before each procedure. Handle surgical instruments and supplies with precision and adhere to established protocols for sterile technique. 
  • Patient Preparation: Assist in the positioning of patients and ensure proper draping to maintain a sterile environment during procedures. Vital signs, perform phlebotomy to obtain laboratory specimens, documenting intake and output, ADLs, patient rounds and repositioning.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with obstetricians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate smooth and efficient surgical procedures.
  • Sterilization and Maintenance: Maintain surgical instruments and equipment. Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and organization of the operating room.
  • Documentation: Accurately document surgical counts and ensure all required records are complete and accurate. Admit, discharge, and transfer patients in fetal monitoring system.
  • Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond quickly and effectively to any changes in patient condition or emergencies.
  • Compliance: Adhere to hospital policies, infection control procedures, and safety guidelines at all times.

  • Training and Education: Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities as needed.
  • Inventory Management: Assist with ordering and restocking surgical supplies and equipment when necessary.
  • Cross-Training: Provide support and flexibility to assist with other departments or roles as required by hospital needs.

Responsibilities

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience in an acute care hospital setting, particularly in an OB/GYN environment, is highly desirable. 
  • Proficient in the use of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of sterile techniques and infection control procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

Required Licensure/Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Preferred Education

  • Current certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) is preferred.
  • Completion of a recognized surgical technology program or certification program is preferred.

Employee Health Requirements

Exposure to:

  • Chemicals: Disinfectants, deodorizers, Betadine, Bensoin, alcohol, Formalin, others as listed per MSDS sheets.
  • Video Display Terminals: Average
  • Blood and Body Fluids: High risk for exposure due to patient population on unit; however, the use of protective clothing and universal precautions minimize the risk.
  • TB or Airborne Pathogens: Minimal risk exists, given the patient population; however, usage of protective clothing and universal precautions minimizes the risk

Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):

  • Speech: Required to communicate with patient/families/staff/doctors, coworkers, ancillary personnel and other department heads. Ability to ask for help.
  • Vision: Needed to read instrument dials/faces, perform phlebotomy
  • Smell: Helpful for detection of incontinence, bleeding, vomitus and other odors which would be reported to the RN
  • Hearing: Necessary for call lights and patient verbalizations in order to determine patient safety.
  • Touch: Needed for providing patient contact for offering support, reassurance, and providing skin care if necessary, perform phlebotomy

Lifting of patients off their beds that are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh more than 35#. Carry meal trays approx 5-65 ft waist high. Fire extinguisher may be carried up five flights of stairs and several hundred yards in an emergency.
