Overview

The Outpatient Pharmacy Services Manager is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational oversight, and clinical coordination of ambulatory pharmacy services, specialty pharmacy programs, and outpatient infusion pharmacy services. This role ensures high-quality, cost-effective, and compliant delivery of pharmaceutical care across diverse outpatient settings. The manager leads interdisciplinary collaboration, oversees staff performance, supports expansion efforts, and drives patient-centered outcomes through clinical excellence and operational efficiency.

Essential Duties:

Leadership & Oversight:

  • Provide day-to-day management and strategic oversight for ambulatory clinics, specialty pharmacy operations, and outpatient infusion services.
  • Supervise clinical pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff across assigned outpatient areas.
  • Serve as a key liaison between pharmacy services and ambulatory clinical teams, infusion centers, and specialty providers.

Operational Management:

  • Ensure efficient and compliant medication distribution processes, including sterile and non-sterile compounding, cold chain management, prior authorizations, and third-party payer requirements.
  • Oversee procurement, inventory control, and medication storage across outpatient locations.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures aligned with URAC, ACHC, and/or other applicable accreditation standards.

Clinical Services Development:

  • Support expansion and enhancement of clinical pharmacy services in primary care, specialty care (e.g., oncology, rheumatology, infectious disease), and infusion clinics.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to implement pharmacist-driven protocols (e.g., chronic disease management, transitions of care, adherence monitoring).
  • Ensure compliance with REMS programs, therapy monitoring, and payer requirements for specialty medications.

Financial Management:

  • Monitor revenue cycle processes including charge capture, billing accuracy, and reimbursement optimization.
  • Assist with budget development, productivity tracking, and cost-saving initiatives for outpatient programs.

Quality & Compliance:

  • Monitor quality metrics, regulatory compliance, and patient safety initiatives for all outpatient services.
  • Lead audits and corrective actions related to accreditation, DEA, Board of Pharmacy, and payor networks.
  • Support data collection and reporting for clinical interventions, outcomes, and performance dashboards.

Staff Development & Training:

  • Recruit, train, and evaluate staff performance.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, clinical excellence, and staff engagement.
  • Provide leadership development opportunities and mentorship for pharmacists and technicians.

Responsibilities

Required Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive pharmacy practice experience, including at least 2 years in an outpatient or ambulatory care setting.

Required Education:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an ACPE-accredited institution required.

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior leadership or management experience preferred.
  • Experience with specialty pharmacy workflows, payor requirements, and infusion services is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of outpatient care models, drug distribution systems, and specialty medication access pathways.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and lead quality improvement initiatives.
  • Knowledge of accreditation requirements (e.g., URAC, ACHC), 340B compliance, and CMS regulations.
  • Proficient in using pharmacy systems (e.g., EPIC Willow Ambulatory, QS/1, ScriptPro, or similar).

Preferred Education:

  • Board Certification in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy (BCACP), Oncology (BCOP), or Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) preferred.
  • Masters degree (e.g., MBA, MHA, MS in Health Informatics or Pharmacy Administration) preferred.
